About Us

Launching Learners, LLC is an Atlanta, GA based small business devoted to bringing the joys of science to audiences of all ages through hands-on programs centered around the construction of model rockets. Launching Learners business philosophy focuses on the development of critical thinking skills and the reinforcement of basic interdisciplinary concepts. Doing so provides opportunities for participants (school-age through adult) to investigate, explore options,
test, and then receive a response These are core elements of the Scientific Process.
Launching Learners is owned and operated by Ed Anderson, a retired public school educator, science education consultant and United States Air Force veteran where he served as a weather observer and meteorologist.

Activities in this series focus on Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion: 1). An object will not change its motion unless a force acts on it; 2). The force of an object is equal to its mass times acceleration; and, 3). For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. While these are statements of science they are also relevant to our everyday experiences. This will be shown through a series of hands-on activities utilizing toy cars, plastic connector tracks, stopwatches, and linear measurement devices.

participants apply Newton’s first law of motion by measuring the distance traveled and the elapsed time for a moving object. They will calculate the speed of the moving object and observe how the speed of a moving object changes on different surfaces. (60 minutes)

participants will use gravity to accelerate cars and determine what factors affect the cars’ speed. They will calculate the average speed of a car rolling down a ramp. Compare the speed of a car to its starting height on the ramp. Introducing the concept of potential and kinetic energy. (60 minutes)

participants will measure the changing speed of a car rolling downhill to determine whether it is accelerating. They will calculate the average speed of the car at two different points on the ramp and determine whether the car is accelerating.

participants construct a can that rolls forward, stops, and then rolls
back. This will demonstrate many concepts related to energy and its different forms.

participants will construct a balloon-powered racer from a styrofoam tray, pins, tape, and a flexible straw.

participants test a slingshot-like device that throws a mass, causing the car to move in the opposite direction.
